What you actually get
A country you can still cross on foot
France has something almost nowhere else does: a national footpath network, the GR, that runs unbroken for tens of thousands of kilometres and is waymarked with two painted stripes on a rock. It is why self-guided walking works so well here. You are never bushwhacking. You are following a red-and-white flash from one village to the next, and at the end of the day there is a guest house that knows you are coming, a shower, and dinner cooked by someone who lives there. Your bag has gone ahead in a van. That is the whole trick, and it is what we have been arranging since 2007 from our office in the Beaujolais. The GR5 crosses the Alps from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean. The GR10 does the Pyrenees, ocean to sea. The GR65 is the old pilgrim road. Between them are the quieter regional trails through the vineyards of Burgundy and the ochre villages of the Luberon. You pick the region and the daily distance; we book the beds in the right order and move the bags.
