“It was great value for money because just about everything is included in the price which means that in reality you need little spending money once you get there. For me it was a very easy holiday in that I was picked up from the airport, transported around and fed lots of lovely food (fantastic four course meal every evening) so all I had to do was enjoy the great walking and the company.”
“I also booked a tour of the medieval villages in Beaujolais and it was first class. The itinerary covers some beautiful areas, with superb accommodation to welcome you after a day’s walking. Highly recommended.”
Finland changes so completely with the season that it is really two countries. From December the north goes dark and blue, snow takes the sound out of the forest, and the aurora arrives without warning over the pines — chased from a heated sleigh, a snowmobile, or the glass roof of a cabin, with a husky team for company by day. Then the light comes back, absurdly, until by June it barely leaves: the lakes turn to mirrors, the birches go green overnight, and the whole country moves outdoors to a wooden cottage with a sauna at the water’s edge. In between there is ruska, three short weeks in September when the fells turn copper and the first auroras return over empty trails. Helsinki holds it all together — a small, confident design city of harbourside saunas, market halls and Alvar Aalto’s curves. Which is why, in Finland, when you go matters more than where.
