“It was great value for money because just about everything is included in the price which means that in reality you need little spending money once you get there. For me it was a very easy holiday in that I was picked up from the airport, transported around and fed lots of lovely food (fantastic four course meal every evening) so all I had to do was enjoy the great walking and the company.”
“I also booked a tour of the medieval villages in Beaujolais and it was first class. The itinerary covers some beautiful areas, with superb accommodation to welcome you after a day’s walking. Highly recommended.”
England is unusually good for walking for a reason most visitors never hear about: a legal network of public footpaths, about 140,000 miles of them, that cross private land by right and have done for centuries. It is why you can walk from one village pub to the next through fields that belong to somebody else, and why the country is stitched together by paths rather than fenced off from them. The South West Coast Path alone runs 630 miles round Cornwall and Devon and Dorset, and the Jurassic Coast section is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of what is in the cliffs. Inland it is quieter and stranger: the chalk of Wiltshire with Avebury and Stonehenge on it, the limestone dales of Yorkshire, the fells above Windermere that made Wordsworth. Our English walking holidays are self-guided, which here means we book the inns and guest houses in the right order along the trail, move your bag between them, and hand you the notes and the OS maps. The rest of the day is yours.
